Nuclear disarmament can best be advanced by establishing a climate of global security. We need progress in eliminating the threat from nuclear-armed terrorists; in stopping further proliferation; and in resolving conflicts involving nuclear states - such as Israel, India and Pakistan. I support Global Zero’s activities to work for a world where nuclear or large-scale conventional conflict is unthinkable.

President Frederik Willem de Klerk was President of South Africa from 1989 to 1994. In 1990, President de Klerk gave orders to dismantle South Africa's nuclear weapons program before revealing its existence to the international community. During his presidency, President de Klerk also called for a non-racist South Africa and brought apartheid to an end. For these efforts, he was awarded a shared Nobel Peace Prize with President Nelson Mandela in 1993. President de Klerk's efforts led to South Africa’s acceptance into the international community after years of isolation. In 2000, President de Klerk founded The FW de Klerk Foundation to promote his presidential heritage.
