Gareth Evans is an accomplished Australian public servant and the current President of the International Crisis Group, an independent global NGO. As the Foreign Minister of Australia from 1988 to 1996, he was best known internationally for his role in developing the UN peace plan for Cambodia, helping conclude the Chemical Weapons Convention, and helping initiate a new Asia-Pacific regional economic and security architecture. He has written and edited numerous books on international affairs. In June 2008, he was appointed to co-chair (together with former Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi) the International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament.
