Everyone should contribute to the best of one's ability to clear the road towards zero nuclear weapons. The nuclear-weapon states must outline the process by which they will progressively reduce their reliance on nuclear weapons and describe the steps and conditions necessary to get to zero. At present, their analysis is short-sighted. It is unsustainable in the long run to keep nuclear weapons for oneself, for unknown future scenarios, while telling everybody else that the world gets more dangerous if they obtain them.

Henrik Salander is a Swedish diplomat who has focused on nuclear weapons and disarmament. In addition to serving the Swedish government as the Head of Disarmament and Non-Proliferation in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he was the Secretary-General of the Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission, an international effort that produced a report with a series of recommendations to reduce the danger posed by nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. In 2009, he begins work as the Chairman of the Middle Power Initiative, a campaign to promote the elimination of nuclear weapons.
