Foreign Min. Lakhdar Brahimi

Map

For us in the Non-Aligned Movement, the NPT was a historic bargain whereby the nuclear club members would progressively get rid of their nuclear arsenals, while the rest of us committed to not acquiring nuclear weapons. For all these years, alarmingly, there was no nuclear disarmament and far too much proliferation. Powerful voices are at long last rising from all corners of the world to revive and work for such an objective.

Foreign Min. Brahimi is a former Algerian diplomat and United Nations envoy. Following Algeria's independence, he served his country as an ambassador, first to Egypt and then to the United Kingdom. As an Arab League Special Envoy, Brahimi brokered the Taef Agreement in 1989 which ended the civil war in Lebanon. Following retirement as the Foreign Minister of Algeria in 1993, he went on to serve the United Nations, helping with conflict and post-conflict situations and working to improve the performance of United Nations peacekeeping. After the events of September 11, 2001, Brahimi led the United Nations mission to Afghanistan, and in 2004 he traveled to Iraq as a Special Envoy of the Secretary General to help form an Interim Government. He is a member of The Elders, a collection of world leaders working to address difficult global challenges.
