Her Majesty Queen Noor, Valerie Plame Wilson and Lawrence Bender confirmed as panel guests at the screening of COUNTDOWN TO ZERO in conjunction with GLOBAL ZERO on Demand Zero Day Written and Directed by Lucy Walker

Tuesday 21 June, 2011

Following the screening of COUNTDOWN TO ZERO at the Global Zero UK summit on Demand Zero Day, an expert panel consisting of anti-nuclear weapons activists, Global Zero movement leaders Her Majesty Queen Noor, ex-CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson and Oscar-winning producer Lawrence Bender will discuss the on-going urgency to eliminate worldwide nuclear weapons. The event will be streamed live to over 49 cinemas and participating venues around the country which are hosting simultaneous Demand Zero Day screenings as part of Dogwoof’s ‘Good With Films Ambassadors Programme’.

COUNTDOWN TO ZERO is a compelling documentary by renowned British filmmaker and Academy Award® nominee Lucy Walker (Waste Land, Blindsight), which offers a passionate and riveting look at the history of the atomic bomb and the chilling threat posed by nuclear arms stockpiles today. COUNTDOWN TO ZERO is the first documentary since An Inconvenient Truth to be invited to screen in Official Selection at both Sundance and Cannes Film Festivals

COUNTDOWN TO ZERO traces the history of the atomic bomb from its origins to the present state of global affairs: nine nations possessing nuclear weapons capabilities with others racing to join them, with the world held in a delicate balance that could be shattered by an act of terrorism, failed diplomacy, or a simple accident. Written and directed by acclaimed documentarian Lucy Walker, the film features an array of important international statesmen, including former world leaders Jimmy Carter, Mikhail Gorbachev, Pervez Musharraf and Tony Blair. It makes a compelling case for worldwide nuclear disarmament, an issue more topical than ever with the Obama administration working to revive this goal today.

The film was produced by Academy Award® winner Lawrence Bender (Inglourious Basterds, An Inconvenient Truth) and developed, financed and executive produced by Participant Media, together with the World Security Institute. Jeff Skoll, Diane Weyermann, Bruce Blair and Matt Brown are the film’s Executive Producers.

COUNTDOWN TO ZERO will be released nationwide on 24 June 2011.

Dogwoof - Good with Film

Dogwoof is the leading UK independent film distributor for documentary and social issue films. Previous successes include Black Gold, widely credited with shifting Starbucks’ position on fairtrade; The Age of Stupid, which led to the 10:10 campaign; The End of the Line, which was largely responsible for Marks & Spencer and Pret a Manger changing their tuna policy; and (in partnership with The Co-operative) the Oscar® Nominated Burma VJ, which on the eve of the 64th Birthday of detained former leader Aung San Sui Kyi, was the first film ever to be screened at No. 10 Downing Street. More recent Dogwoof films include the 2011 Oscar® Nominated documentaries Restrepo, which stands as iTunes highest selling documentary in the UK, and Gasland which exposes the toxic practices of the natural gas industry. As well as achieving great success with these titles, Dogwoof is unique in that it identifies a double bottom-line and sees the potential of film to bring about social change. They recently launched a new website www.goodwithfilm.com and the Ambassadors programme which seeks to empower local entrepreneurs to screen Dogwoof films prior or during the films’ commercial release. Global Zero

Since its launch by 100 international leaders in Paris in December 2008, the Global Zero movement to eliminate nuclear weapons has grown to 300 leaders, including current and former heads of state, national security officials and military commanders, and 400,000 citizens worldwide; developed a practical step-by-step plan to eliminate nuclear weapons through phased and verified reductions; and launched an international student campaign with 75 campus chapters in eight countries. In 2009-2010, President Barack Obama, President Dmitry Medvedev and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon endorsed the Global Zero movement, with Obama declaring, “Global Zero will always have a partner in me and my administration.” The next Global Zero Summit will take place in London June 22-23, 2011, and will convene more than 100 eminent Global Zero leaders and senior government officials.
